How many clocks do you have in your house? Is there a sweet spot with them? How do you feel watch vs clock? In terms of usefulness, art, even status. When did clocks stop having the same status as watches and why?
I hated only relying on my digital devices (computers…phones…), adding one in my rumpus room has been a game changer when time flies watching a show or playing a game.
My family notoriously has an absurd amount of clocks in the house—at least one in every room for some reason. Perhaps it stems from an anxious root, a disdain for watches paired with loungewear? My grandparents used to have a grandfather clock that’d I’d get scolded at for trying to play with. It would have a sun and the moon faces rotate throughout the day (and, you guessed it, night).
It looked something like this I think, with a darker wood! I remember the face of the moon was very similar to this:
I miss hearing its chimes. I know some people find that annoying, especially going every quarter hour. Growing up with it, though, it was comforting. As a little kid, to wake up in the middle of the dark and hearing it was like seeing a lighthouse in a storm.
The closest I have now is my cat’s automatic feeder lol. A different kind of charm.
Perhaps someday, when I have more space to give a grandfather clock the love and respect it deserves, I can get one.
Other notable clock mention: my childhood best friend’s bird clock, that would make a different bird sound every hour :) I still remember exactly where it was in the kitchen and how it’d sound. I wonder how many bird lovers came to be from that clock being a part of their daily lives.
To the designer of that clock, I hope you receive fan mail to this day and haven’t had to pay for a drink since this clock’s inception.
